HRI are committed to maximising energy efficiency, improving the environment, and meeting national energy saving obligations..
Energy Efficiency
Embracing Ireland’s Climate Action Plan, HRI intends to lead by example as an advocate and champion of sustainability along with guiding and supporting the industry to increase its understanding of sustainability priorities through practical measures and financial supports, where possible. We have identified and actioned five key Environmental objectives:
Sustainability is at the heart of everything they do at Fairyhouse Racecourse. Recently crowned Horse Racing Ireland Racecourse Of The Year, we spoke to Richard Stapleton and Peter Roe who's passion for sustainability shines through.
Under the SEAI Public Sector Partnership Programme, HRI are working closely with the SEAI to achieve our 2030 and 2050 energy decarbonisation targets and are required to report progress annually on our energy efficiency and greenhouse gas emission reductions.
The All-Ireland Pollinator Plan is a framework bringing together different sectors across Ireland to create a landscape where pollinators can survive and thrive. Implementation is coordinated by the National Biodiversity Data Centre. Horse Racing Ireland is a Business Supporter of the All-Ireland Pollinator Plan 2021 - 2025.
The ‘100 Million Trees Project’ is a community-driven initiative to plant 100 Million Native Irish trees across Ireland over the next decade, to reverse the immense environmental damage caused by the reduction of forests worldwide and the loss of huge areas of biodiversity. Over 7,500 trees have been planted at Fairyhouse, Limerick and Galway racecourses, with many more Irish racecourses planning to participate in this project.
Levy Ireland are catering partners at Leopardstown, Fairyhouse and the Curragh racecourses. They are market leaders in sustainable food; delivering locally sourced, plant forward and in-season menus at all racecourses, and are continually working with suppliers to reduce emissions and food waste.
Thorntons provide a full range of Recycling and Waste Management services to HRI Racecourses, one of the first waste management companies in Ireland to invest in technology to convert non-recyclable waste materials to Solid Recovered Fuel (SRF) product.
HRI has launched its transition to HVO fuel for racecourse vehicles, sourced from Certa, with Fairyhouse Racecourse being the first track to roll out this initiative, marking their commitment to sustainability.
Ireland’s Climate Action Plan 2023 is the second annual update to Ireland’s Climate Action Plan 2019. The plan implements the carbon budgets and sectoral emissions ceilings and sets a roadmap for taking decisive action to halve our emissions by 2030 and reach net zero no later than 2050.
The Climate Action Framework for the Commercial Semi State Sector23 was approved by Government in July 2022.
The HRI Board, representing key sectors of the Irish breeding and racing industry, have signed up to the Five Commitments within this Framework. READ MORE HERE
