Emmet McNamara has strong racing credentials, being a son of trainer Eric McNamara. In common with so many top Irish jockeys, Emmet cut his teeth on the pony racing circuit where he was the champion rider for two years running. In his final season as a pony rider, he eclipsed Norman Williamson's long-standing record by riding 65 winners.

Emmet was crowned champion apprentice jockey at the end of the 2008 season with 26 winners. The first highly significant winner he rode was the Aidan O'Brien-trained Port Douglas in the Group 2 Beresford Stakes at the Curragh in 2015. 

However, he enjoyed his greatest day in the saddle when winning the Epsom Derby on the O'Brien-trained Serpentine in 2020. He made all the running on the 25/1 chance. 

Emmet won the Group 3 Derrinstown Stud Derby Trial Stakes on the O'Brien-trained Douglas Macarthur in 2017 and among his listed winners are Fiery Lad (Carlingford Stakes 2008), Mister Tee (Star Appeal Stks 2009) and Duchess Of Foxland (Hurry Harriet Stakes 2010) while major handicap successes came on Tis Mighty in the Irish Cambridgeshire in 2008 and on Duchess Of Foxland in the Madrid Handicap two years later. 

Emmet gained a first-class honours degree in Accounting & Finance at Dublin’s Griffith College in 2018.
